A Walk on the Beach

         A walk on the beach

         Deep breaths, swift steps,

         Sun and wind at noon.

         Echoes of movement in sounds,

         Feet, waves, shells, sand

         Pushed down

         Spread about.

         One , Two

         Breathe in

         Three, Four

         Breathe out.

         A walk down the beach.

         Smells of air tinted

         with salt, sunlight and smiles.

         Waves draw sea lines

         On sand and shells

         Those chosen as wet

         Dampened by the tide.

         Those chosen as dry

         Left to abide

         Untouched

         By today

         By give and take

By the way the waves break.

         A walk on the beach

         A smile

That turns to tears and back.

I am as a shell under foot,

         Now covered with foam,

         Now dry;

         Softening, moving, breaking,

         Changing shapes and places.

Just because there is a beach,

Just because there is a wave,

Just because grains of sand are all around,

Just because a foot walks on the ground.

Just because it is a sunlit Saturday,

         Just because I am.
